Swift parrot

The TCT’s current threatened species priority is to ensure the State Government takes urgent action to protect swift parrot habitat on both public and private land. The action required is detailed in the Tasmanian Conservationist October 2009. We encourage you to write letters supporting our proposals (the newsletter article provides guidelines for letters).

Recently the TCT has produced a volunteers training DVD ‘Swift Parrots in Tasmania: identification and nesting behaviour’, which is available for purchase for $5.00 from the TCT office or it can be downloaded in two parts below.

Tasmanian devil

Recently the TCT has publicly expressed serious concerns regarding the effectiveness of the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program and called on the State and Australian Governments to reform the program, including making the establishment of an insurance population the urgent priority. Recovery program participation

The TCT is represented on the following national and state committees to provide advice to the Australian and Tasmanian governments on management of threatened species issues.

  • Save the Tasmanian Devil Program Stakeholder Reference Group
  • National Swift Parrot Recovery Team
  • Tasmanian Galaxiidae Recovery Team

The TCT takes on a range of other actions to advance conservation for threatened species and wildlife, including lobbying for funding, media publicity, participating in program reviews and workshops, and educational projects.

Increased funding for threatened species

The TCT has called on the State Government to dramatically increase investment in threatened species conservation but to ensure this is focused on delivery of on-ground management. Details of our proposals can be found in the 'TCT submission on the 2010-2011 State Budget'.
